The Art of Scent: What to Wear, When and Why

Perfumes for him and her, decoded — the notes worth knowing and the fragrance for every moment of the day.

Di Amara Lindqvist · 8 ottobre 2026 · 8 min di lettura

Scent is the most intimate thing you wear.

No one sees it. Yet it arrives before you do and lingers after you leave.

A fragrance can make a room feel warmer, a conversation feel closer and an ordinary Tuesday feel a little more like an occasion.

But choosing one can feel strangely complicated. Top notes, heart notes, eau de parfum, eau de toilette, his, hers, day, night.

Here is everything worth knowing — simply.

First, understand the notes

Every perfume unfolds in three stages, like a short story told on your skin.

Top notes are the opening line. Bright, light and fleeting — citrus, bergamot, pink pepper, fresh herbs. They are what you smell in the first fifteen minutes.

Heart notes are the plot. Once the top notes fade, the true character appears — rose, jasmine, iris, lavender, orange blossom, spices. They stay for several hours.

Base notes are the ending you remember. Rich, deep and slow — sandalwood, cedar, vetiver, vanilla, amber, musk, oud. They linger well into the evening, sometimes until the next morning.

This is why you should never judge a perfume on a paper strip in the first minute. Wear it. Wait. Let the story finish.

The scent families, decoded

Fresh: citrus, green leaves, aquatic and herbal notes. Clean, awake, effortless.

Floral: rose, jasmine, peony, tuberose, iris. Romantic, soft or surprisingly bold.

Woody: cedar, sandalwood, vetiver, patchouli. Grounded, warm and quietly confident.

Amber and oriental: vanilla, resins, spices, tonka bean. Sensual, enveloping, made for evening.

Gourmand: caramel, coffee, praline, almond. Comforting and a little indulgent.

Most perfumes are a blend of two or three families. Once you know which ones you return to, choosing becomes far easier.

Perfumes for her

Many women begin with florals — and for good reason. A soft rose or jasmine feels feminine without trying too hard.

But the most memorable women's fragrances often add contrast. Rose with oud. Jasmine with sandalwood. Iris with leather. Vanilla with smoky woods.

For day, look for luminous florals with citrus or musk: orange blossom, neroli, white tea, peony.

For evening, let the base notes lead: amber, vanilla, tuberose, warm spices, dark woods.

Wear the fragrance that feels like you on your best day — not the one that feels like someone else.

Perfumes for him

Men's fragrance has moved far beyond the heavy, sporty scents of the past.

Today the most elegant choices are often quieter: vetiver, cedar, bergamot, iris, tobacco leaf, a touch of leather.

For day, choose fresh woods and citrus: bergamot, grapefruit, cypress, vetiver, sea salt.

For evening, go warmer: sandalwood, tonka, cardamom, amber, oud.

Restraint is everything. A man's fragrance should be discovered at close range, not announced across the room.

Beyond him and her

Perfume has no gender. Notes do not know who is wearing them.

Some of the most beautiful scents on a man are rose and iris. Some of the most compelling on a woman are vetiver, leather and smoke.

Shared fragrances are increasingly common — and there is something quietly romantic about a scent that belongs to both of you.

What to wear, when — and why

Morning and the office: fresh, clean and close to the skin. Citrus, tea, soft musk, light woods. The goal is to smell well cared for, not to fill the lift.

Weekend daytime: relaxed florals, fig, green notes, salty skin scents. Something that feels like linen and sunshine.

Summer heat: heat intensifies fragrance, so go lighter — neroli, bergamot, vetiver, coconut, mineral notes. Apply less than you think.

Winter: cold air mutes scent, so you can go richer — amber, vanilla, incense, cashmere woods, spices.

Dinner and evenings out: this is where base notes shine. Sandalwood, tuberose, oud, leather, tonka.

A first date: something warm and close to the skin. Memorable, but never overwhelming. Musk, soft woods, a hint of vanilla.

Weddings and celebrations: a luminous floral or a polished woody scent that lasts — you will be hugged a lot.

How to wear it well

Apply to pulse points: wrists, the base of the throat, behind the ears, the inside of the elbows.

Do not rub your wrists together. It speeds up the top notes and flattens the story.

Moisturise first. Fragrance lasts longer on hydrated skin.

Eau de toilette is lighter and brighter; eau de parfum is richer and lasts longer; extrait is the most concentrated of all.

Two or three sprays are usually enough. If people can smell you before they see you, it is too much.

Store perfume away from sunlight and heat — never in the bathroom.

Building a small wardrobe of scent

You do not need twenty bottles.

Three is a beautiful number: one fresh scent for daytime, one warm scent for evenings, and one that feels entirely yours.

That last one becomes your signature — the scent people associate with you long after you have left the room.

The scent you remember

In the end, the best perfume is not the most expensive or the most fashionable.

It is the one that makes you feel more like yourself when you wear it.

The one someone notices when they lean in.

The one that, years later, still brings back a person, a place or a perfect evening.

Choose it slowly. Wear it often.

Let it become part of your story.
